Last week I traveled back “home” to Columbus, Ohio, to speak at the Ohio Credit Union System ZENITH08. I say “home” because we started Angie’s List in Bexley, Ohio, just outside of Columbus back in 1995, and it’s always fun to get back there.

The audience was very kind and seemed really interested in how we grew Angie’s List from nothing – especially the part about me selling memberships door-to-door in the Columbus area – to today where we have more than 650,000 members nationwide.

Many wanted to know how to start or grow a business, and while I don’t claim to have that market cornered, I was happy to share a little insight. In a nutshell, we took a risk and worked really hard, and we’re still doing both those things.

Next stop is a speech to the Home Business Network Annual Event, 'Celebrating Home Businesses,' sponsored by the small business division of the Greater Cleveland Partnership – one of the nation’s largest metropolitan chambers of commerce.

So, here I come again, Ohio!
