In a small, but scary trend, a growing niche of health care providers are requiring their patients to sign away their right to comment openly, anonymously, publicly and privately about the level of service they received from that physician – good or bad.

So, even if you’ve had a great experience with your doctor and you want to share that information on a forum where expectant mothers gather to chat, or even with just your friends and family, you can’t do it if you sign that waiver. Well, we’re completely against any attempt to stifle free speech. Consumers – or patients – should be free to post doctor reviews, just as that doctor has a right to respond to that review.

One complaint from the medical community is that online rating services are filled with anonymous and critical reviews of doctors. But Angie’s List reviews aren’t anonymous – we, and the doctor being reviewed, know exactly who submitted the report. And, for the most part, the vast majority of the health reviews submitted to Angie’s List are positive.

What do you think? Should patients be required to waive their right to free speech in order to receive care from their doctor? Would you allow a surgeon to operate on you, knowing that if something goes wrong you have lost your right to make others aware of that doctor’s performance? Have you had to sign a privacy waiver yourself?

Check out some recent press on medical gag orders on Fox Tampa, Fox News and Florida Health News.

How often do you actually read all the paperwork you're asked to fill out and sign at the doctor's office?
You might want to consider getting to your next appointment a few minutes early, just to make sure you've got time to read--especially if you receive a “Mutual Agreement to Maintain Privacy” form.

While there's only a small number of doctors that use these forms, signing the “Mutual Agreement to Maintain Privacy” form essentially means that you, the patient, have agreed to waive your free speech rights and won't post any doctor reviews (negative or positive) online. Anywhere on the internet: Not on Angie's List, not on Twitter--not even on your own personal blog.

In my opinion, this practice is nothing short of an attempt to stifle the consumers’ right to free speech.

What do you think?

Reading through blogs makes it easy for me to keep track of interesting renovations, renovation/home improvement trends, great ideas and useful hints. (And every now and then I'll find a great post where the author mentions they found their builder/plumber/landscaper/contractor on the List--I can't say I don't love finding those!)

If you come across a blog you think I'd be interested in, please let me know. I'll periodically post some blogs that have interesting info for you all to read, too.

Not too long ago I asked my readers if they blogged. I got a few replies, and, lo and behold, the Greenwood Family Blog led to some great pictures of a recent renovation (they're Angie's List home renovation inspiration-worthy). I love the photo slideshows--they really emphasize how much has changed. (Also: Nice work on the tub! The "before" was pretty scary.)

For a great account of the trials, tribulations and triumphs of new homeowners, check out Happy Bungalow. It's written by Angie's List members Michael and Heather in Chicago. They've had a few nice List shout-outs because of some great service they've received. Most recently they found a great chimney repair company on angieslist.com. They're on a self-professed "posting slackage" right now, but I hope to see more from them soon. There's an ongoing saga with their sump pump that I'd like to see meet a quick end.

Tomorrow and Thursday (Feb. 4 and 5), I’ll be out of snow-covered Indianapolis and in much warmer, sunnier weather. California, here I come!

I’m speaking at an online marketing summit on Thursday in San Diego, but if you’re in the Los Angeles or San Diego areas, look for me on your local news.

In LA, I’ll be taping an interview about shady contractors and our 2009 project poll with consumer reporter Ric Romero on ABC.

And then later, in San Diego, I’ll be talking to “Consumer Bob” Bob Hansen live during the 4p.m. news on Wednesday.

If we get video footage, I’ll be sure to link to it soon!

My column from the February issue of the Angie’s List Magazine

It’s hard to believe that it’s almost been a full year since we launched doctor reviews on Angie’s List. Last March, we started with 50 categories, a handful of reports and a desire to improve the way you search for a doctor.

If you haven’t checked the List for your dentist or doctor, sign in to see how other members have rated their experience. And if you haven’t submitted a doctor review recently, be sure to do that as well.

When Kim Bellard relocated to Westerville, Ohio, last summer, finding a new dentist for his family was at the top of the to-do list. “We hadn’t received many recommendations from neighbors or friends, but we were receiving lots of mailers from dentists,” he says. “I wanted patients’ confirmation of the glowing statements the marketing materials made, so we used Angie’s List to cross-reference with the mailings and found a dentist we like.”

Today, you can find reviews in 140 categories, and we’re collecting more than 6,000 new health reviews every month. We’re also improving AngiesList.com to help you search and report on your health care more effectively.

And starting in March, when you Check the List, you’ll be able to narrow the search para-meters to include just health or service categories.

My favorite improvement is what will happen on the health provider profile page. The new layout will include a ton of great information, like accepted forms of insurance, hospital affiliations and links to reviews on other physicians in the practice. You’ll also see where the doctor attended medical school, when he or she graduated and specialty certifications.

In addition, we’re rolling out a totally separate report form for health care providers, so you can offer ratings on things like availability, bedside manner, billing and administration, and more.

Lots of reasons prompt a search for health care providers — life events, relocation, injury or illness — and there should be a lot of resources to help identify the best doctors for your situation. Angie’s List is great at collecting individual experiences, and your response to health care ratings (3 million-plus searches to date) tells me our grapevine shouldn’t be confined to home projects.

We want to hear from you — what are we missing? What can we do better? Submit a suggestion online or send it to me directly at tellangie@angieslist.com. In the meantime, I hope these changes will make searching for and reporting on health care providers an easy and more informative process for you and your family!
