The Early Show on CBS had a great segment today about the dangers of hiring unlicensed contractors.

Seems like every time I watch a home repair show or read about home projects, the quoted professionals always introduce themselves as "licensed." That wasn't the case a couple years ago, but homeowners today are getting smarter and smarter when it comes to hiring contractors, and the good professionals understand the importance of being - and staying - licensed.

Angie's List has done a lot of work on the website to bring attention to every professional's licensure status. We encourage every member to look for the licensed icon when searching ratings and reviews (denoted by a green check mark). We also remind them to ask the contractor about his or her license to really get educated on what it means.

July 2010 I hired a contractor, but I made the mistake of hiring someone who was not licensed. I have heard of many horror stories but thought that, "It wont happen to me". I was very very wrong, it did happen, only a few weeks ago. So to all out there looking for a contractor, please be sure and make sure they are licensed and bonded!!!!! Dont make the same mistake I made!

I am a State of Illinois Licensed Plumber and Plumbing Contractor. I love Angie's List and Angie's List Customers. It is great that you are bringing the issue of Licensing to the forefront. Too many people get hurt by these fly by night outfits that prey on the elderly and inexperienced homeowners that just pick a contractor without checking them out with the BBB and/or Angie's List.
